ISAB was created in 2018 and has had many student participants throughout its creation. We would like to acknowledge the members who came before our current members, including the original members who helped build the foundations of this board with a lot of care, compassion, and planning for the future. The current board members are grateful to their predecessors for the work they started. Below is a list of past ISAB alumni and contributors to this blog.

My majors are Sociology, Global Studies, and minor in Education
Besides ISAB, I am also the board members of Chinese Students Association; International Students Association; and Worldhealer's UCSB Global Awareness Club.
My favorite thing about UCSB is the environment. UCSB has one of the best the college views in the state.
Being an international student, I would like more people to hear from us. I will try my best to contribute my strength not only into the development of our international students’ communities, but also to make our school even better.

Hana Churay (U.A.E.) 2018-2020
Hello! I’m Hana Churay and I’m a third-year Political Science major, specializing in International Relations, and partaking in the Technology Management Program. I'm originally Lebanese, but was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Dubai, UAE! Apart from ISAB I’m a part of the Lebanese club, Arab Student Group, The Olive Tree Initiative, UCSB Students for Justice in Palestine and a member of Alpha Phi sorority. My favorite thing about UCSB is the positivity and support people are willing to give, and of course the beautiful beach weather. Being international, I see how the situations, traditions, ideas and news are strongly related to Americans and not necessarily the rest of the world. This is why I think ISAB is so important to show the diversity that this school has to offer and to involve the international students!
مرحبا! انا اسمي هنا و انا بالسنة الثالثة بجامعة ر أدرس العلوم السياسية تحديداً العلاقات الدولية. انا لبنانية لكن ولدت في أمريكا في بنسيلفانيا و وسكنت في دبي كل حياتي! باستثناء من isab اشارك في نوادي آخر مثل النادي اللبناني و النادي العربي و مبادرة شجرة الزيتون و طلاب من أجل العدالة في فلسطين و نادي نسائي اسمه alpha phi. الشيء المفضل عندي في هذه الجامعة هو الطلاب الإيجابية و المساندة وطبعًا الطقس جميل و البحر. من جهة شخص من مختلفة في العالم أرى أن الوضع و التقاليد و تفكير و الاخبار متعلقة كثيرا بالأمريكيين و اريد ان يجمع الطلاب الدولي.

Joyce Lu (Taiwan) Founding Member 2018-2020
Hi! My name is Joyce Lu. I am a third-year Economics and Accounting student at UCSB. I am from Taipei, Taiwan and it has been almost three years since I started my college journey in the United States. Other than the International Student Advisory Board, the on-campus clubs and societies I am currently involved in include UCSB Taiwanese Student Association, International Student Association, and Undergraduate Accounting Society. My favorite thing about UCSB is its supportive educational environment and the cultural diversity among the student body. As an international student, I joined ISAB for the hope to take part in making the international student community more visible on campus and sharing my experience with students who are in need.
Hi! 我叫陸之樂(Joyce), 今年在UCSB 唸大三主修經濟與會計. 我來自台灣, 今年是我在美國唸書的第三年. 我參與的學校社團包括臺灣同學會, 國際學生會跟UCSB的大學會計學會. 在UCSB唸書的這幾年我最喜歡學校良好有效率的教學環境還有學生多元的文化. 參加ISAB 讓我有機會用我的經驗幫助其他UCSB的國際學生還有讓國際學生的意見更被聽見. 希望我可以藉由這個職位幫助到更多一起在異鄉打拼的同學！

Lauren Roberts (U.S.) Founding Member 2018-2020
Hi! My name is Lauren Roberts. I am a fourth-year biological anthropology and Italian studies double major. I am from San Diego, California but my family moved around a lot and I spent 4 years living in Rome, Italy. In college I studied abroad twice, first in Bologna, Italy then in Santiago, Chile. Studying abroad has been my favorite part of college so far, it gave me the chance to be fully immersed in different languages, revisit the culture I grew up in and explore a totally new one! It also allowed me to connect with a new set of people after coming back to UCSB. I love talking to people, learning languages, hiking, climbing, kayaking and exploring new places! I work for UCSB Adventure Programs and Campus Advocacy Resources and Education. I am also the academics chair for Gamma Phi Beta, a sorority on campus. I joined ISAB to help improve the international student experience at UCSB, after studying abroad twice I better understand the struggles and the importance of studying in a foreign country. I want to help make UCSB the best it can be for our global Gauchos!

Hola! Me llamo Lauren Roberts. Estoy en mi cuarto año en UCSB. Estudio antropología biológica y italiano. Soy de San Diego, California pero mi familia ha cambiado de hogar muchas veces y he vivido en Roma, Italia por 4 años. Estudié al extranjero dos veces durante mi tiempo en la universidad. La primera vez in Bologna, Italia para mejorar mi italiano y revisitar la cultura in cual crecí. Luego fui a Santiago, Chile para explorar una cultura completamente nueva y para mejorar mi español. Estudiando al extranjero ha sido unas de mis experiencias favoritas en la universidad aún. Debido a estas experiencias de intercambio he obtenido la oportunidad a conocer un otra comunidad de gente en UCSB. Me gusta hablar con gente nueva, aprender idiomas, escalar, hacer kayaking, trekking y salir por nuevas aventuras! Trabajo por UCSB Adventure Programs y Campus Advocacy, Resources and Education. Además, me encargo de los asuntos académicos de mi sororidad, Gamma Phi Beta. Soy parte de ISAB porque entiendo los retos y la importancia de los estudiantes internacionales en este campus. Ciao, mi chiamo Lauren Roberts. Sto nel mio quarto anno a UCSB. Studio l’antropologia biologica e gli studi italiani. Sono di San Diego, California, ma la mia famiglia è trasferita molte volte. Ho vissuto a Roma per quattro anni. Ho fatto due programmi di scambio durante la mia carriera a UCSB. Primo, a Bologna per riconoscere la cultura e la lingua italiana. La seconda volta, a Santiago, Chile per conoscere una cultura totalmente nuova e per migliorare il mio grado di spagnolo. Le programme di scambio sono state qualcune delle mie esperienze preferite nella università. Così ho conosciuto un nuovo gruppo di gente. Mi piace parlare con nuove persone, imparare lingue, l'arrampicata, andare in kayak, ed il escursionismo in generale. Lavoro per Adventure Programs e Campus Advocacy, Resources and Education. Pure, sto incaricata dei questioni accademici per la mia “sorority,” Gamma Phi Beta. Faccio parte di ISAB perché conosco gli sforzi e l’importanza degli studenti internazionali in questo campus. Minh Hua (U.S.) 2020
Yo! My name is Minh Hua and I am a fourth-year English and Mathematical Sciences double major. Although I am an American citizen, I was born in Vietnam and I only recently moved to America in 2010. I am half-Chinese and half-Vietnamese, owing to the fact that my mom is from the Vietnamese province of Vinh Long (right on the Mekong Delta) and my dad was born in Fujian, a province on the southeastern coast of China. During my time at the University of California, Santa Barbara, I have been a reporter for The Bottom Line (TBL), a producer for UCSB TV, a research assistant for the English department, as well as an operations intern for the United States Air Force. I have also been a member of Data Science @ UCSB and I highly recommend the club to any students interested in data science or machine learning.
Although I am not an international student, my motivation for joining the International Students Advisory Board (ISAB) was to encourage others to carve out a small piece of UCSB they can call home. I distinctly remember a day in December 2018 when I stumbled across a few Vietnamese international students walking in the University Center but I missed the opportunity to connect with them; feeling despondent, I vowed to never again let insecurities get in the way of making friends. Luckily, I had the opportunity to meet the 2017-18 ISAB members during an interview for a TBL story and they wholeheartedly encouraged me to proactively seek out and befriend the people that reminded me of home. With their encouragement, I now have cultivated a tight knit community of more than ten Vietnamese international students, and UCSB has been a warmer place ever since. I was awestruck at the incredible strength that a few words of encouragement gave me, and I knew that I wanted to spend my last year at UCSB repeating and sharing that inspiration as much as possible. This is why I am a current member of ISAB, and wherever or whoever you are, I hope you also find your own pillars of support and wellsprings of happiness to propel you through four fun-filled years at the best university in the world.

Hế lô! Mình tên là Hứa Duy Minh và mình là sinh viên đại học năm thứ tư, đang học ngành Anh Văn và Toán Ứng Dụng. Mình có quốc tịch Mỹ nhưng mình sanh ở Việt Nam và năm 2010 gia đình mới di cư qua Mỹ. Mình người Việt gốc Hoa, tại má mình quê ở Vĩnh Long còn ba mình quê ở Phúc Kiến. Ngoài làm thành viên của ban cố vấn học sinh quốc tế ra, mình đã là phóng viên của The Bottom Line, người xuất bản của UCSB TV, trợ lý nghiên cứu của ban English tại UCSB, và đã nghiên cứu hoạt động cho không quân của Mỹ. Mình cũng đã tham gia câu lạc bộ khoa học dữ liệu của trường và mình nhiệt tình khuyến khích ai thích vô ngành khoa học dữ liệu hoặc trí tuệ nhân tạo thì tham gia.
Dù cho mình không phải là học sinh quốc tế, cái động lực thúc đẩy mình tham gia ban cố vấn là vì mình muốn động viên mọi người tìm ra một mảnh đất ở UCSB mà mình có thế gọi là "mái ấm". Mình nhớ có một lần mình mất đi cơ hội đó. Trong một ngày đông lạnh lẽo và buốt giá, mình đang ngồi trong trung tâm đại học thì bỗng nghe thấy bên tai hai vọng nói mà khơi lại trong mình những ký ức lớn lên ở miền đất xa xôi ấy. Thì ra là hai bạn học sinh quốc tế người Việt, đi cùng bên nhau như những đôi nam nữ đã cũng kề cạnh bên nhau trên vỉa hè sau trường lúc tan học. Trong buổi chiều âm u ấy, họ bừng sáng lên như hai chú đom đóm, nuôi trong mình một niềm hy vọng nhỏ nhoi: không lẽ năm nay mình kiếm được đồng chí? Tiếc thay, lúc đó mình đang gọi điện thoại, chưa kịp cúp máy gọi một tiếng "ê!" là hai chú đom đóm đã lướt đi vào bóng đêm…
Sau một khoảng thời gian, mình có dịp gặp và phỏng vấn những thành viên cũ của ban cố vấn năm 2017-18. Sau khi mình kể ra câu chuyện của mình, họ đã nồng nhiệt khuyên mình đừng nên ngại giao lưu và tìm bạn mới, nhất là khi gặp người có chung hoàn cảnh với mình. Chỉ vì lời động viên của họ mà mình đã tìm ra được một sức mạnh mới mẻ và một niềm tin sảng khoái để bây giờ mình đã tựu tập được một cộng đồng học sinh quốc tế Việt ở UCSB, làm cho ngôi trường này ấm áp và thân thiện hơn. Lúc đó, mình nhận ra rằng mình muốn dành năm cuối ở trường để truyền cái sự cảm hứng mãnh liệt đó cho càng nhiều người càng tốt. Dù cho bạn là ai hoặc ở nơi đâu, mình mong rằng bạn có thể tìm được những nơi nương tựa lúc áp lực và những niềm vui nho nhỏ hằng ngày, để đẩy mình thành công qua khỏi cái cuộc phiêu lưu bốn năm sắp tới. Cứ đi hết mình đi rồi về hết buồn!

我常常听中国音乐，然后我很喜欢周杰伦和鞠婧禕。我知道有很多人不太喜欢鞠婧禕应为他们觉得她只是漂亮，没有任何才能。但是我觉得她在《游泳先生》演了很好。没关系！每个人都有自己的见解！

Tianle Yang (China) 2019-2020
大家好！我叫杨天乐，来自中国四川。我现在是一名大二学生，专业方向是经济学和全球研究。除了ISAB，我在参与的社团的组织有国际学生会，中国学生会，和 Finance Connection。我爱好旅游和艺术。在旅行途中，我领略了文化碰撞的乐趣，但也同时了解了在异国探索学习的艰辛。在UCSB学习的这段时间里，我十分享受UCSB自由多元化的氛围，这个学校聆听并包容不同的群体，并尽力去提升所有学生的学习生活体验。因为我自己作为国际学生的经历，我决定成为ISAB的一员，和来自不同国家的国际学生交流，并尽我所能帮助他们。我会尽力去促进文化间的交流，并且帮助国际学生更加轻松地融入校园。
Hi! My name is Tianle Yang and I came from Sichuan, China. I am a second year Economics and Global Studies double major. Apart from ISAB, I am also a member in International Student Association, Chinese Student Association, and Finance Connection. I love traveling and art. Through my traveling experiences, I have understood that communication between different cultures is interesting and inspiring. However, I also got to learn the struggling of studying and exploring in a new country. When I study in UCSB, I enjoy the educational environment of freedom and diversity here. UCSB is inclusive to different groups of people, trying to improve study and living experiences of all students. Because of my own experiences as an international student, I decided to become a member of ISAB to help and communicate with other international students. I will try my best to promote communication between cultures and help international students get involved in campus more easily.

Hello hello~~
My name is Phuong. I am a third-year Economics and Accounting major, and I’m from Hanoi, Vietnam. I have been in ISAB for one and a half years, and this is one of the best decisions I have ever made in life. Beside the love for ISAB, I also like traveling, talking to people, and Kpop (woohoo~~)
UCSB and the international student community here is a really important part of my life in the US. I appreciate the culture, my friends, the professors, and the advisors so much and I will never regret coming to UCSB!

Thành viên người Việt Nam duy nhất trong ISAB: Bùi Thị Bích Phượng. Chị là sinh viên năm 3, chuyên ngành Economics and Accounting tại UCSB. Phượng đã ở trong ban cố vấn của ISAB được một năm rưỡi, và đây là một trọng những quyết định sáng suốt nhất của chị, theo lời chị nói. Bên cạnh ISAB, Phượng yêu thích du lịch, giao tiếp với mọi người, và Kpop. (woohoo~~)
UCSB và cộng đồng sinh viên quốc tế ở UCSB là một phần quan trọng trong cuộc sống ở bên Mỹ của chị. Chị nói, chị biết ơn nền văn hóa, bạn bè, thầy cô, và những người cố vấn ở đây, và chị sẽ không bao giờ nuối tiếc quyết định chọn UCSB!

Meg Winnett (U.S.) 2019
Hi! My name is Meg Winnett and I am a Global Studies major and English minor from San Francisco, California. I studied abroad at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and Universidad Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires, Argentina. My two experiences abroad inspired me to be part of ISAB because I know how great it is to have a community and resources in a foreign country…and how sad it is to not have them. I speak Spanish and I have a cat named Hufflepuff and a dog named Rosie. I am involved with UCSB’s student government, Associated Students, and am our campus’ Voter Registration Director. My favorite part of UCSB is Isla Vista. Even though it’s gross and smelly, it is a community of young adults learning how to be real grownups in a truly beautiful beachside setting. I am going to graduate UCSB in June 2019 and my next step will be working at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida! I like long walks on the beach, sparkling wine, and musical theatre.

Yo estudié al extranjero a la Universidad de Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica y a la Universidad Torcuato di Tella en Buenos Aires, Argentina. Mis dos experiencias al extranjero me inspiraron formar parte de ISAB porque yo sé que es genial tener una comunidad y los recursos en un país extranjero…y que triste no tenerlos. Yo hablo español y tengo un gato se llama Hufflepuff y un perrito se llama Rosie. Pertenezco a el gobierno de los estudiantes de UCSB – se llama Associated Students – y estoy la directora de registro de votantes de nuestro campus. Mi parte favorito de UCSB es Isla Vista. Aunque es asqueroso y maloliente, es una comunidad de jóvenes quien aprendiendo como ser adultos de verdad en una hermosa locación a lado de la playa. Me graduaré UCSB en junio 2019 y después, ¡voy a trabajar a Walt Disney World en Orlando, Florida! A mi me gustan las caminas largas por la playa, el vino espumoso, y el teatro musical.
