Quarantined Gaming

Dear Diary,

It is currently Week 7, and boy, have I got things to tell you. It would seem that the world is still fighting uncertainty and quarantine—most quite creatively but others quite terribly. In any case, quarantining with my girlfriend has not been bad at all. In fact, it’s been quite spectacular.

We’ve recently taken up gaming together, and we are currently playing a multiplayer cooperative game called Stardew Valley. I myself am an avid gamer, but my girlfriend would not call herself a “current” gamer. She played a few games when she was young but dropped the habit (or addiction I’d say) when she grew up. Nevertheless, tired of the same old dull routine of movies, I decided to ask her to play Stardew Valley with me. At first, she was reluctant. But now, I can definitely say she’s even a bigger gamer than me—we’ve logged 20 plus hours in this game since writing to you last week.

The reason why we are so addicted to this game is because it’s rewarding. In Stardew Valley, your primary objective is to grow a farm that you have inherited from your grandpa. There are other mechanics like fishing, mining, and animal husbandry, and these all combine to create an addictive multiplayer game. Me and my girlfriend have been playing nonstop, stopping only to eat food or do whatever homework was required that day.

Speaking for myself, the reason why I’ve been addicted to the game is its ability to allow me to do things that I currently cannot do with my girlfriend—even when we are quarantined together! The game is an opportunity for me and her to build teamwork by working together towards a common goal—the building and maintenance of a profitable business. We are in constant communication—discussing, and sometimes bickering, over what to grow, what to sell, and how to maximize profit. At the end of the day, we go to sleep excited, happy that we’ve made the right decisions and that we respected each other.

And that brings me to the point of this journal entry. You see, diary, quarantining does not have to be bad when you are quarantining with the right person. It would seem that for us, all troubles melt away when we have each other, and we can stay sane by working together at something. So moral of the story? Get Stardew Valley and start connecting with your loved ones!

P.S. You can get married in this game!

P.P.S We just did!
